Reconstruction of Parliament facing various constraints, says project manager
Updated | By Noxolo Miya
The team involved in parliament's reconstruction project following the 2022 fire says it has run into some challenges.
The blaze engulfed five floors of the National Assembly building and an adjacent Old Assembly Wing in January 2022.
It caused the roof to collapse and destroyed hundreds of offices which housed MPs. Authorities arrested Zandile Mafe in connection with the arson attack.

"We work within constraints as well, We work within national key point,” said Simon Mashigo, who is the project manager.
“There’s also heritage issues that we should be mindful of, and, of course, the issue of budget is another element that we need to deal with. So the designers were contending with all those constraints and trying to fit everything within those parameters that was outlined."
Parliament's Secretary, Xolile George, says more offices will be added to the building.
"We are now busy, as we speak, to work on the additional 54 offices that we want to complete by July so that when members start no members of Parliament would say we do not have offices."
