They confiscated some items that were expired, or had insects and rat droppings in or on them.

Two stores were slapped with fines for not adhering to labour and consumer laws, while one had no business license for food.
KZN Labour spokesperson, Lungelo Mkamba, says their inspectors will check up on the same stores again at a later stage.

"What they found there is expired food - which has been confiscated. They also found infested with insects, rat droppings, cockroaches - there's filthy conditions, and the store itself is also promoting rat infestation," he said.
Mkamba said necessarily action will be taken against the various stores - while the municipality has also issued them with fines.
