Ramokgopa says performance of Eskom coal fleet getting attention
Updated | By Gcinokuhle Malinga
Electricity Minister
Kgosientsho Ramokgopa says they are working on improving the performance of
Eskom's installed coal fleet.
He says they will do this by intensifying the relationship between Eskom and the original equipment manufacturers (OEMs).
Ramokgopa has been speaking at a briefing on the performance of the national grid in Pretoria.

"As you’ll know, we have been besieged by a number of challenges in relation to the performance of these units. To ensure that we're able to improve the availability of spare parts and expertise that come from the OEMs, we already have contracts with them from a maintenance point of view. So, there is a need for us to ensure that we strengthen that relationship."
Head of Generation at Eskom, Bheki Nxumalo, says six power stations have been identified as needing urgent attention.
“We are starting now to commission those units at Thuthuka. So, in the next two months, we are going through a major commissioning period. We expect that Thuthuka will then start performing much better than what has happened.
Similarly to Kendal we understand the issues there. We are now starting to commission the units at Kendal.”
