Ramaphosa: SA open to negotiations as US tariff deadline looms

With US tariffs due to take effect at the end of the week, President Cyril Ramaphosa says all channels of communication remain open to engage with Washington on trade.

The 30% taxes imposed on South African goods are the focus of Ramaphosa's weekly newsletter. 

 

Ramaphosa says the country is America's biggest investor from the continent, adding that South African exports do not threaten or compete with US producers.

 

Twenty-two companies invest in various sectors including, mining, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and the food chain.

Ramaphosa says South African products have been benefiting American consumers by giving them more choice.

 

The president says the priority now is to protect local industries by building resilience.

 

He says the Export Help Desk set up to support producers and exporters will help them expand into new markets in Africa, Asia and the Middle East.
