Director of Media Monitoring Africa William Bird has welcomed the appointment of the 12 members.

"They are walking into a firestorm just about to stablise, make sure they comply with contracts and generally try and organise themselves. They are facing a near-impossible task."

President Cyril Ramaphosa confirmed the board in a statement on Tuesday, saying the SABC is vital to our constitutional democracy.

He'd faced mounting pressure to appoint a board with some civil organisations threatening legal action.
