Ramaphosa: A COVID-19 resurgence will be major blow to economy

With just over 800 000 confirmed COVID-19 cases in SA President Cyril Ramaphosa has warned a resurgence of the virus could lead to a major blow to our emerging economy.

Addressing the nation last night he's urged South African's not to let their guard down and to continue following the COVID-19 regulations.

"But even as the holidays approach, we cannot let our guard down. Unless we take personal responsibility for our health and the health of others, more people are going to become infected. More people are going to die. "

Last night he also announced tighter restrictions for the Nelson Mandela Bay - which has been declared a hotspot. Ramaphosa says the country can still avoid a second wave.

"I'm asking you to recommit to this fight. We are in a fight of our lives. We can still prevent the virus from spreading any further if we take the appropriate steps now. Just as we did in the early days of the pandemic.

Meanwhile, the Eastern Cape Provincial Government has welcomed the president's announcement last night to declare Nelson Mandela Bay a Covid-19 Hotspot.

President Ramaphosa announced a tighter curfew for Nelson Mandela Bay from 10 pm to 4 am and that the sale of alcohol from retail outlets in the Metro would only be allowed between 10 am and 6 pm from Monday to Thursday.

Alcohol consumption in public places has been banned and post-funeral gatherings or so-called “after tears” parties have also been banned.
