R1.8 million theft case: Police say more victims could come forward

Police believe more people may have been scammed by a trio of suspects due in court today.

One of their alleged victims, a retired Pinetown teacher says she was conned out of R1.8-million.
The police's Thulani Zwane says according to the woman, she became romantically involved with one of the three suspects and was apparently asked by the other two to give them money for cleansing water - so that she and her boyfriend could get married.
"It is alleged that the suspects approached a teacher and they told her that they want a R20,000 deposit. At a later stage, the money went missing and the suspects disappeared.
"As a result, the women opened a case in Pinetown for further investigation," Zwane said.
The 57-year-old woman also told police she was advised by her boyfriend to retire earlier this year and deposit her pension payout into an account so that he and his friends could start a business.
The three men, aged between 28 and 32, are due in the Pinetown Magistrate's Court today.
