Psychologist says pandemic equipped matrics with skills
Updated | By Andrew Robertson
A Durban educational psychologist says if Grade 12 pupils have been taught from an early age how to deal with adversity, the disruption caused by the lockdown should have little to no effect on their upcoming exams.
Over one million matrics will begin their final exams in three days.
Nicola Burh says there's no doubt the pandemic made learning more challenging for Grade12s this year.
But she believes it also equipped them with some skills that companies look for when hiring.
She says matric is not a year on its own, it's a combination of five years of high school, and the work they are doing is a combination of grade 11 and 12.

So COVID-19 is a completely isolated situation where they spent the year on their own.
A lot of the material they are learning comes from last year as well.
She adds the matrics this year can say the pandemic affected their marks or they can try to do the best they can given the circumstances.
"When it comes to your future career, companies are looking for people that are adaptable," she said.
