PSA vows to bring the services to a standstill

The public sector union has a list of grievances, including the planned termination of the contracts of more than 100 workers at its campuses.

It claims that 72 of the employees who have received notices of termination are academic staff.

The college was placed under administration in 2020 after facing a string of corruption allegations and a damning report by the Auditor-General.

It was brought out of administration last year after the Minister fired the administrator and an acting principal was appointed.

The PSA's provincial manager, Mlungisi Ndlovu, says they are disturbed by the institution’s dire financial situation.

He claims at least R7 million is owed to service providers, while the sheriff of the court has already seized some of the college’s assets.

"We believe that these contract workers should have been converted to permanent. This college has a history of not being able to pay the workers on time. It has a history of not being able to pay service providers.

"The national speaker of parliament must discuss these issues to ask questions to (Higher Education Minister) Doctor Blade Nzimande, in terms of providing support.

'In this college, there's never been stability in terms of the principal in the past 10 years.”

Newswatch has reached out to Coastal KZN TVET College for comment but has yet to receive a response.
