Health and Social Development officials have teamed up to provide more support for those dependent on legal and illegal substances.

MEC for Social Development, Weziwe Thusi delivered this message on International Day Against Drug Abuse yesterday. She says details of new forums and drug action committees are available on her department's website.

Thusi says a 24-hour Substance Abuse Helpline has also been set up with the assistance of the South African Depression and Anxiety Group.

"We're working with NPOs in different areas, even in the rural areas. They assist us because for somebody to get detoxification they must get professional help. We fund these NPOs in the local communities to assist young people in their areas," she said.

Meanwhile she's reminding people that the doors to rehabilitation centres in Newlands West and Madadeni are also always open.
