The group entered the municipal building which is near the ANC office and demanded that municipal staff stop their operations immediately.

It is understood their grievance is a political matter.

The municipality's Sifiso Zulu says services will be temporarily disrupted as a result.

"So in the interest of staff members, their safety as well as that of their vehicles and other assets as well as other customers, we have decided to close the offices," said Zulu.

"At this stage we do not know the purpose of the protest. Nothing has been submitted to the municipality in form of a memorandum."

Zulu believes the protest is not linked to the municipality.

Meanwhile, police spokesperson, Thulani Zwane says officers are keeping a watchful eye on the protest.

Zwane says local police received information that people were blocking the road.

"About 200 people blocked the roads with burning tyres."
