Protesting undertakers served with interdict: Home Affairs

Home Affairs says it's been granted a court interdict stopping undertakers from causing any further disruptions at its branches.

Funeral practitioners under the banner of the Unification Task Team (UTT)  have been protesting since Tuesday over some regulations.

The UTT says they want permanent permits that will allow funeral parlours to remove bodies from hospitals and mortuaries.

They also want to be able to register deaths on behalf of families.

Some Home Affairs branches have been forced to close because of the protests.

The department's spokesperson, Siya Qoza says the interdict prevents UTT members from intimidating staff and people visiting Home Affairs offices.

He says the interdict has been served on the Unification Task Team.

"The issues that they raised with us in April we cannot implement without meeting other state organs.

"When we engaged with the Department of Health and local municipalities, they said we needed at least 12 months to look at how we can holistically respond to them and that is the commitment that we have given back to the UTT members."
