"The N2 between Higginson Highway and the M7, Northbound has been blocked off due to a huge protest," Durban Metro's Parboo Sewpersad said.

Durban Metro Police and SAPS Public Order Police are on the scene of a violent protest on the northbound carriageway.

Protesters blocked the freeway with burning tyres this morning.

Durban Metro's Parboo Sewpersad says by the time officers arrived at the scene the demonstrators had already fled. He's urging motorists travelling towards Durban or Amanzimtoti to find alternate routes for now.

"This is especially [the case] if they're heading towards Durban - because this is no the Northbound carriageway. You will get people who will slow down to see what's happening across on the Northbound carriageway," he said.

It's still unclear what sparked the unrest. Sewpersad says their main priority for now is to get motorists through the area safely.

He's urging those travelling south - that's towards Amanzimtoti - not to slow down to view the protest - as rubbernecking is causing major delays in that direction.
