Protest over killing of DUT student allegedly shot by police

A community in Kwambonambi, in northern KZN, is up in arms and calling for justice for a DUT student who was killed allegedly by police over the long weekend.

The family of 23-year-old Phumlani Sithole says he was shot dead outside a tavern in Nozambula.


Nhlakanipho Sithole says his brother was shot when a group of people who were being chased by police ran in his direction.

He says officers opened fire and Phumlani was hit and died.


"The police have shown no remorse, and no one is taking accountability. 


"It would have been better if they admitted to their mistake. No one came back to the scene to inform the family of what has happened. 


"We are only asking for justice. We want police to take action in bringing those implicated to book," says Sithole.

Locals have been protesting outside the KwambonambiPolice Station today - calling for the perpetrators to be arrested.


The Independent Police Investigative Directorate is investigating the shooting.
