Protest action rocks KZN, Metro police on high alert

KZN is in the grip of four disruptive protests. Two of them, taking place in Durban, involve tertiary students.

Durban Metro police spokesperson, Parboo Sewpersad says a group's been demonstrating along Umgeni Road near Makro.  


"They are burning tyres on Umgeni Road near eThekwini College. Motorists are urged to stay away and use alternative routes." 


Sewpersad says DUT students are taking part in another on the Berea, " Steve Biko students who have gone back into the campus. We believe one student is injured, we are not sure how he was injured." 


Then, Sewpersad says a large group of MK veterans was seen marching in the CBD along Dr Pixley Kaseme Street earlier. 


"They have passed City Hall and are proceeding to Stanger Street. There are about 300 of them moving towards the provincial offices of ANC. There are no disruptions at the moment, we are closely monitoring the situation."

Meanwhile, on the south coast, traffic's been brought to a standstill in Ezingolweni in Port Shepstone, after serious and violent protest action on the N2. 


Demonstrators have blocked the road with burning tires, debris and rocks. Metro's spokesperson in Izingolweni - Musa Thwala - says the residents are believed to be protesting over water supply issues.
