Projects planned to improve water supply - Kaunda
Updated | By Lauren Beukes
A number of projects to improve water supply in eThekwini are in the pipeline.
That's according to Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda, who tabled the city's budget on Tuesday.
He said the one tabled in March has to be reprioritised after the recent floods caused R3.8 billion worth of damage to infrastructure.
Kaunda said before the disasters, the city was already in partnership with Umgeni Water to implement six major projects, including the upgrade of Hazelmere Dam and Illovu River Emergency Scheme.
"The renovation of the Durban Heights Water Reservoir, which will be completed before the end of June. The replacement of a water aquaduct to maximise water supply in Umlazi Water Reservoir at an estimated cost of R892 million."

"Upgrading of Umbumbulu Pump Station, which will be completed in 2024. Upgrade on the construction of R28 billion Umkhomazi Dam. Lower Umkhomazi Water Scheme to be completed in 2025."
He acknowledged areas such as Tongaat are still suffering from water supply problems.
"We want to assure the residents of Tongaat and other areas that are still experiencing water and electricity supply challenges that we are putting all our resources towards finding a lasting solution.
"We appeal for patience and we understand the frustration as some repairs will take time. For example, our water treatment plant in Tongaat will take approximately five to six months to repair at an estimated cost of R30 million."
