Process to identify Joburg fire victims underway

The process of identifying the bodies of the victims of the fire at a Johannesburg CBD building got underway at a mortuary in Soweto on Friday.

Acting CEO of the Gauteng Forensic Pathology Services, Thembalethu Mpahlaza, said 62 victims were burnt beyond recognition.

"Out of the 74 bodies that we have collected, we only have 12 bodies that are identifiable - that can be viewed." 

 

Mpahlaza was speaking outside a mortuary in Diepkloof where the bodies were moved.

 

He said social services are on hand to assist the families coming to identify their loved ones.

The fire at the hijacked building broke out in the early hours of Thursday morning, leaving dozens more injured.
