The Salvation Army's Thataetsile Semeno says they went to the scene to see where they could help.

He says they spoke to some of the survivors.

"They are still crying over the loss of life - people they knew, others were family members. One lady lost her brother and sister in the fire.

"They don't know what they need now except to say they have lost their family members. So that is the situation that is happening and being faced by people. There are a lot of people outside the building who have run away and who have been sleeping on the streets."

Semeno says those wanting to help can do so through the organisation's emergency assistance fund.

"There are children who have lost their school uniform, clothes, blankets and food. So we are appealing to South Africans and society to please lend a hand so we are able to support the victims."
