Probe launched into death of Pietermaritzburg prisoner

A probe has been
launched following the death of an inmate at the Pietermaritzburg Medium A
Correctional Centre.
It's understood the man died during a scuffle on Friday afternoon.
Correctional Services spokesperson Sechaba Mphahlele says a criminal case has been opened with the police.
The incident has also been reported to the Judicial Inspectorate for Correctional Services.

"Inmates classified as maximum risk attacked correctional officials at the centre around midday. Critically wounding one official who suffered eight wounds to the head and two in the left arm.
“He's currently in hospital where he is receiving treatment. The other official was left with a swollen eye after he was repeatedly punched by inmates. During the scuffle to stop the attack one inmate died and circumstances leading to his death are under investigation.”
