Probe into KZN truck driver employment complete
Updated | By Sandile Zikhali
An inter-departmental task team's wrapped up its probe into the employment of foreign truck drivers in the country.
The group - comprising transport, labour and home affairs members - will submit its findings to officials at North Beach in Durban this morning.
An investigation began into how foreign drivers were being hired after the trucking industry raised concerns. This, after several attacks on non-South African drivers.
Seven cargo trucks were set alight in Mooi River - just last week. During a meeting with truck owners yesterday, the Police Minister challenged them to review their list of employees.
An official has urged truck owners not to hire illegal foreign workers.
"It would be illegal for any employer to employ illegal migrants in South Africa. We continue to advise the industry - not only the trucking industry. Our primary focus is that before you employ a foreign national - you must make sure that it is a rare skill. That is what we have been engaging - whether truck driving is a scarce skill."
