Officials say the vehicle travelling on the N11 near Pepworth lost control and crashed into a bridge before landing on a nearby railway track and catching fire early on Saturday morning.

The department's Ishmael Mnisi says the department will assist the affected families.

''Following this gruesome road crash, the Transport Minister Dipuo Peters, has made a plea to all road users, motorists, passengers, pedestrians and the citizens at large to exercise extreme caution on the roads at all times.

''As the Department of Transport we shall enlist the services of our agency, the Road Accident Fund, to assist the family of the deceased with services,'' he said.

Meanwhile, officials say harsh action will be taken against those driving vehicles that are not roadworthy including fines of up to R50 000.
