Probe continues into medics who ‘abandoned’ Umlazi woman

The Department of Health in KwaZulu-Natal says an investigation into an incident where paramedics allegedly refused an Umlazi woman help is still underway.

Mbali Sikhosana died in hospital last week, two weeks after she was admitted, after suffering from a heart condition.

 

Sikhosana made headlines in June after it emerged that paramedics refused to help her because they did not want to climb the stairs at the family's home.

They have since been suspended. 

 

The family said they will take legal action against the Health Department.

 

KZN Health Head of Department Sandile Tshabalala says they want to continue to engage with the family.

 

"The MEC [Nomagugu Simelane] did everything possible to create contact between herself and the family and between the department and the family. 


"Following that contact, the MEC then sent a few of our officials to go and discuss with the family how we are going to manage the matter."

Members of the Democratic Alliance will visit the family on Wednesday.
