Prestigious KZN school rocked by alleged racist outburst

An investigation has been launched after an apparent Whatsapp was shared on social media in which a Pietermaritzburg Girls High School pupil uses the k-word.

The KwaZulu-Natal Education Department's Scelo Khuzwayo says a task team has been established to resolve the issue.
"We are very disappointed as we are against any form of racism. A team has been constituted to look into the matter. A meeting is taking place between all stakeholders today. We have no doubt that before the end of today, a decision would be taken as to the way forward," he says.
Khuzwayo says the child involved faces possible suspension.
Counselling will also be made available to pupils.
"There should be counselling involved as we need to make sure everyone is on the same page."
The school's governing body has since released a statement.
"The school has zero tolerance to racism of any kind. We explicitly promote human dignity and equality. We condemn in the strongest terms the racist language used in the voice note circulating on social media," the statement says.
It says it cannot confirm the child's identity, as she is a minor.
"The acting principal, a departmental official and the Governing Body chairman have addressed all learners and staff present at the school today, to make it clear that action is being taken. The correct procedures and disciplinary actions are being followed. This matter is contrary to the beliefs and ethos of our school. We do not tolerate racism."
