Pressure on KZN police to solve Gumede family murder
Updated | By Noxolo Miya
There's growing pressure on law enforcement teams to track down those responsible for the murder of the Gumede family in Pietermaritzburg.
Five people, three of them children, were found dead in their home in Mgodini last week.
Police recovered an axe and knife from the scene.
Officers have been questioning two people, but no charges have been filed yet.
"After we were informed about this incident, the MEC for Social Development Nonhlanhla Khoza dispersed a team of social workers to meet with the family to give them psycho-social support, which, at the moment, we're still waiting for the report because we're not even sure how many other family members that are left,” says Social Development's Mhlabunzima Memela.
The department has meanwhile appealed to community members to assist the government in dealing with gender-based violence cases.

"We cannot live like this in the province where the lives of people are not respected, and people continue to undermine the rights of women and children,” says Memela.
"It cannot be the government alone who deals with these kinds of crimes. We also need to work as members of the society and expose those who are involved in this brutal murder of women and children."
