President Zuma must resign today - ANC Caucus

ANC Treasurer-General Paul Mashatile says President Jacob Zuma's deadline to resign is today.

He was speaking following a meeting with the ANC Parliamentary caucus this morning.

"I have now reported to the caucus that the NEC of the ANC has decided to recall President Zuma. The deadline is today," Mashatile says.

It contradicts ANC Secretary-General Ace Magashule's statement yesterday that there were no timelines around Zuma's departure.

Mashatile says the waiting game is over.

"For us, as the leadership of the ANC - we can no longer wait beyond today. We don't want to keep South Africa waiting. If President Zuma will at some point respond, he will respond but we can't continue waiting. The decision has been taken, it must be implemented. So my message to the caucus today was just that - that they must now proceed with the parliamentary process," he says.

Mashatile says a motion of no confidence is expected to be tabled and discussed in Parliament tomorrow.

He adds should Zuma resign, Cabinet will stay intact and deputy President, Cyril Ramaphosa will take over in an acting capacity.

ANC Chief Whip in Parliament, Jackson Mthembu says they have met with opposition parties, especially the EFF who put forward the motion of no confidence in President Zuma.

"It would have been nice for them to withdraw but they have refused to withdraw their motion. We are now sitting on the next option available to the ANC and that is to amend the motion - but not the substance of the motion," Mthembu says.
