Presidency 'still studying' ruling on King Misuzulu

The Presidency says it's still studying a high court ruling which declared President Cyril Ramaphosa's recognition of Misuzulu kaZwelithini as Zulu monarch invalid and unlawful.

The High Court in Pretoria handed down the judgment on Monday.

The case dealt with an application filed by Misuzulu's half-brother, Prince Simakade Zulu.

The court ordered Ramaphosa to set up an inquiry to probe whether the accession of King Misuzulu was done in line with customary laws.

In its ruling, the court ordered the president to appoint a committee to conduct an investigation and provide a report regarding allegations that the identification of Misuzulu was not done in terms of customary laws and customs.

The prince accused Ramaphosa of failing to fully consult with the royal family before issuing the certificate.

But Ramaphosa's lawyer argued that before the president proceeded with the coronation ceremony, he relied on the representations that were made by the late Prime Minister to the Zulu nation, Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi.

The judge said his ruling was limited to looking at the lawfulness of the process that was followed as per Zulu customs and the law, and not who should be king of the AmaZulu.
