The passenger rail agency put a hold on services over the long weekend, after demonstrators ran riot in Umlazi on Friday - targeting the train station there, as well as a coach and cars - after trains ran late.

Train services remain suspended today.

"I'm assuring passengers the service will resume this week. All commuters will be kept informed. We want to ensure that commuters are safe and our crew, as well as staff is also safe," PRASA's Zama Nomnganga said.

The estimated cost of the vandalism runs into the millions. One passenger's told Newswatch trains haven't been keeping to schedule for over a month now.

She says there's usually an hour-long delay in the morning and evening which means many passengers are arriving late to work.

And she says their queries aren't handled professionally by Metrorail staff. PRASA's Zama Nomnganga explains why some trains haven't been running on time.

"We are [operating] with old infrastructure. We are bound to have delays. It's not like we are doing this deliberately or our drivers are at fault - it's the infrastructure," he said.
