Train station vandalized, property set alight in Umlazi protest

Police have opened a case of public violence after protests turned violent in Umlazi, south of Durban this morning.
It i understood the unrest was as a result of trains having run late.
Video footage shows cars that have been torched and the station itself has been badly vandalised.
Police spokesperson, Thulani Zwane says when officers arrived at the scene at around 7 o'clock this morning, they were met by an angry mob.

He says the situation is calm at the moment but that police are monitoring the area.
"On our arrival, more than 1000 people were gathered there and protesting - they were angry. Four cars were set alight and the ticket office was also vandalised. The motor train coach was also damaged.
"We have opened a case of public violence for further investigation. Our police officers including public order police as well as Metro Police are on the scene. They are monitoring the situation," Zwane said.
