Power issues between KZN, EC behind Ugu water disruptions
Updated | By Steve Bhengu
Officials in Ugu are blaming some of the district municipality's ongoing water problems on inter-provincial electricity issues between KZN and the Eastern Cape.
Water supply has been so low that frustrated residents of Port Edward have appealed to the Water Minister to wade in.
Ugu says more electricity is needed for its plant to pump increased water volumes.
But Eskom can only access power from the neighbouring Eastern Cape.
Municipal spokesperson France Zama says they're making the necessary arrangements with the power utility.
"We have already made even payments with the assistance of Cogta in KZN to Eskom to be able to draw power from Eastern Cape.
"Once Eskom has started to put up the line from Eastern Cape to Umtamvuna plant, we should be able to have an adequate supply of power to be able to treat all the areas that are being supplied by Umtamvuna plant."
