Eskom will ramp up load shedding to stage 4 on Thursday afternoon.

Stage 2 of the power cuts were implemented on Wednesday morning, but the rolling blackouts will intensify from 4pm to stage 4 until midnight.

This means that eThekwini will now also experience the power interruptions, as per the city’s recently adjusted schedule.

Durban was exempt from load shedding until the beginning of this month after the April floods.

The utility's Sikhonathi Mantshantsha says the outages are due to a shortage of generation capacity, coupled with higher winter demand.

He says if there're more unit breakdowns they'll have to extend load shedding into the weekend.

"It is anticipated that stage 2 will be implemented at 05:00-24:00 on Friday.

“This loadshedding will also assist in recovering emergency generation reserves, which have been utilised extensively to meet the increased demand over the last few days.”
