Possible link between Lindelani and Durban taxi rank shootings
Updated | By Khatija Nxedlana
The KwaZulu-Natal Transport Department says it believes there is a link between a shooting yesterday that left three people dead in Lindelani north of Durban and last week's shooting at one of the city's taxi ranks in the CBD.
Police say they are investigating a case of murder and six of attempted murder after the three were gunned down.
Transport MEC Willies Mchunu says one of the people killed last night was a guard from the same security company protecting the Brook Street taxi rank on behalf of Zamokuhle Taxi Association.
It is believed the feud is between the Zamokuhle and Sonke taxi associations.
Mchunu says they will continue meeting with the two feuding taxi associations.
''If that's not happening and not helping then I think we would have no option but to invoke section 91 of our law, in which case, we would have to consider closing or suspending some of the taxi operations related to this matter,'' he said.
Meanwhile, some taxi services in the city are affected today. It is understood drivers and owners are unhappy that eThekwini Metro Police have impounded nearly 300 minibuses this weekend.
The operation was part of route permit enforcement.
