Pongola truck driver abandons bid for bail

The
truck driver involved a crash that claimed the lives of 20 people in oPhongolo
last month has abandoned his bid for bail.

Sibusiso Siyaya, who was charged with numerous counts of culpable homicide, made a brief appearance in the Pongola Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.
The 28-year-old was arrested after his truck collided head-on with a bakkie that was carrying primary school pupils.
Eighteen children - aged between five and 13 years - a teacher's assistant and the driver were killed on the N2.

"The matter was adjourned to the first of December for further investigation, the accused remains in custody as he abandoned his application for bail,” says the spokesperson for the NPA in KZN Natasha Kara.
Meanwhile, in a separate case, the KZN police officer arrested in connection with the murders of two women in Hillcrest will appear in the Pinetown Magistrate's Court for his bail hearing this morning.
