Police probing death of patient who jumped from 6th floor at Steve Biko hospital

Gauteng police are investigating the death of a patient who jumped from the sixth floor of the Steve Biko Academic Hospital in Pretoria.

The 34-year-old man died after he jumped from the window of his ward and landed on the fourth floor.
Police spokesperson Noxolo Khweza says the patient was taken to the intensive care unit, where he later passed away.
The DA's Gauteng Health spokesperson Jack Bloom has called for a full investigation.

"It is very tragic that this apparent suicide happened at the hospital.
"We need to know if this was a psychiatric patient and whether there were proper preventative measures in place to prevent this from happening in the future, have been like in other hospitals where there was no proper security."
The Gauteng Health Department is expected to issue a detailed statement on the matter.
