The union's been reacting to the fatal shooting of a Durban police officer in Botha's Hill on Monday night.

It's alleged the off-duty cop was gunned down while walking to his car after visiting a friend.

According to the quarterly crime stats delivered last week, 24 police officers were killed by criminals in the first three months this year.

Lesiba Thobakgale speaks for SAPU said: "We are very concerned because the killing of a police official clearly means that some members of the community out there would not have a police official.

"With the recent spike of police killings, it is clear that our police officials are under attack and as SAPU, we are further saying that if anyone kills a police official it should be considered to be treason."
