Updated | By Gcinokuhle Malinga
Investigations have begun into the cause of a serious
truck crash on the N3 in Pietermaritzburg that claimed the life of a traffic
cop and a tow truck operator.
The men were assisting an injured truck driver, near Liberty Mall on Friday night, when another truck crashed into them and the overturned tanker.
The driver of the second vehicle fled the scene.
The KZN Transport Department says RTI officer Ntshangase and breakdown operator Kavish Ramnarayan were killed.
A paramedic who was critically injured underwent emergency surgery and is recovering in hospital. Officials closed the N3 until 04h00 on Saturday.

The spokesperson for KZN Transport, Thando Biyela says Officer Ntshangase was a member of the team tasked with beefing up capacity on the route.
"MEC Sipho Hlomuka has urged motorists to work and cooperate with emergency services at accident scenes. He says we should not have lost such a dedicated traffic officer like Ntshangase and the breakdown operator.
"Officer Ntshangase was a very dedicated officer who went beyond the call of duty to save lives on the road.
The MEC wishes to express his deepest condolences to the Ntshangase family and the family of the breakdown operator."
