Shack dwellers movement, Abahlali BaseMjondolo says several people have been hospitalised in Durban due to what they say is police brutality.

The movement's Enoch Cele says police have been using force to evict residents in Sydenham and Dassenhoek today.

"Police shoot our people - who are without weapons. When they come, they shoot us for nothing. Fourteen people have been in hospital while four have been arrested - we are fighting for their release," he said.

Police's Thulani Zwane has only confirmed the presence of police at the Sydenham evictions, but says no injuries have been reported.

"About 300 people were burning tyres and blocking the roads. They were complaining of service delivery in the area. We are not aware of those people who were allegedly assaulted," he said.

Last month, the movement marched to city hall over alleged violence by eThekwini Municipality's Land Invasion Unit during evictions at informal settlements.
