Abahlali march: Protesters demand to see mayor
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
UPDATE: After over an hour of waiting and arguments outside the Durban City Hall - a memorandum of demands by shack dwellers has been delivered to the office of the Mayor.
Protesters earlier tried to storm Durban City Hall after no one came to accept their memorandum.
More than a thousand people have marched there against what they say are violent evictions of shack dwellers by the city.

The marchers had been expecting an official from either the mayor's office or the co-operative governance department to meet them at city hall.

Shack dwellers movement, Abahlali baseMjondolo's Thapelo Mohapi says they informed both parties about the march last week - and were given confirmation of receipt.
"We have requested the mayor to come and receive the memorandum or send a representative for that matter as well as the MEC. But none of these departments are here as yet. At the moment, some people within the Mayor's Office are trying to get hold of somebody who is going to receive the memorandum," he said.
