Death of Limpopo teen sparks urgent call for action against school bullying

An organisation supporting parents says bullying in schools needs to be dealt with urgently.

It follows the death of a Grade 10 pupil in Limpopo.


The schoolgirl from Venda had been bullied by her schoolmates, with one incident captured on camera.


The pupil is understood to have taken her own life. 


Andisiwe Hlungwane of Parent Power says this tragedy can't be ignored.


She says bullying is happening in schools across the country.


Hlungwane says parents can do something about it through the School Governing Body elections.

"With SGB the elections taking place this year, we need parents to understand the power of the voice that they have in terms of being able to select people who are going to govern their school in the best possible way and in the best interest of the children." 


Hlungwane says the SGB elections take place once every 3 years in SA and play a vital role in terms of the policy that are in place within the school. 


"Furthermore the  implementation of the policies and the culture that the school has." 


The South African Human Rights Commission is today visiting the school in Thohoyandou.
