Police on alert as special voting underway at Durban City Hall

eThekwini metro police say additional officers have been deployed to Durban City Hall where specialvoting is taking place today.

City Hall has been the scene of protests by municipal workers over the last week.

Employees from the water and solid waste departments have been demanding a salary increase similar to that given to MK veterans employed in those departments.

The strike has impacted service delivery in eThekwini - including refuse collection.

The city's Msawakhe Mayisela says the dispute is now before the Bargaining Council.

"Despite this illegal strike, the city is working around the clock to ensure that we return the situation to normalcy. 

Mayisela has issued an apology to all our residents, the business community for the inconvenience the strike may have caused.

"We are trying everything possible to mitigate the negative impact associated with it," he said.

The city is meanwhile urging residents to keep their refuse on their property if possible or dispose of it at a landfill while it works to resolve the matter.
