PMB man remanded in custody for allegedly killing cop

A man alleged to have opened fire on police at his home in Pietermaritzburg, instantly killing a female sergeant, wants bail.

Saturday night's shooting also left a captain in a critical condition.


The 48-year-old sergeant and two captains from Plessislaer Police Station had gone to the house in Snathing to investigate a case of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm.

"Police found themselves under fire allegedly from the suspect and the sergeant sustained gunshot wounds," says national police spokesperson Robert Netsiunda. 


"She was certified dead on the scene. The injured captain was rushed to hospital. Police also confiscated a licenced firearm and 18 live rounds of ammunition." 


The NPA's Natasha Kara says the suspect briefly appeared in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate's Court on Monday.

"The matter was adjourned to 7 December for bail application. He is charged with one count of murder and two of attempted murder."
