Eastern Cape police say three pit bulls suspected to be responsible for the gruesome attack on a 37-year-old woman in Port Alfred have been taken away by the SPCA.
Police spokesperson Priscilla Naidu says the dogs apparently managed to escape from a secured enclosure by damaging the perimeter fence.
Zimkhitha Gaga was on her way to work early on Sunday morning when she was mauled by dogs on Alfred Road.

Naidu said in an earlier statement that two men who witnessed the attack alerted a nearby security office and the police were contacted.
She said when police arrived the badly injured woman was lying on the side of the road and had sustained serious injuries to her face and upper body.
An inquest docket remains open for investigation.
