Pinetown residents feel unsafe due to protests at UKZN Edgewood campus
Updated | By Nondumiso Dube
Residents who live near UKZN's Edgewood campus in Pinetown are calling for an end to the ongoing student protests, which they say are disruptive.
Demonstrations on several campuses in the past couple of weeks have been about several issues, including online registration and accommodation.
Some of the protests have been violent.
An Ashley resident says they feel unsafe in their own area because of these protests.
"When they start protesting, they block off the road and then we have a problem to get home. Like yesterday when the guys closed the roads and we can't get home. Something like this gets a bit scary."

Another irate homeowner says he's been complaining to authorities.
"Since there were bullets flying in a residential area, the cops couldn't contain this mob. I have complained to the vice-chancellors of UKZN and they say they can't do anything to rein their students in. So there is no accountability on the part of UKZN.
"So now teargas gets thrown into my swimming area, my niece and nephew who live with us and my pensioner mother lives are in jeopardy because this institution can't control the mob of students. So I think somebody needs to be held accountable."
