Piling rubbish outside Bluff dump site causes stink

Residents of the Bluff in the south of Durban are turning their noses up at the piles of rubbish still being dumped outside a local disposal site.

The Gray's Inn Road site, like many others, was closed during the recent strike by municipal workers.

Community activist, Richard Hawksworth, says despite it having been re-opened, people are still using the pavement outside the gates as a dumping ground.

"It is not the Bluff residents who are dumping here. We caught people coming from town; companies coming to dump here - taking advantage of the situation. One bakkie that was stopped came from Chatsworth. They are dumping stuff they shouldn't be dumping.

"We stopped someone dumping chemicals. We call on people to be considerate. The dump is open, you have to put the bins in the dump. People who think they can take advantage because there is rubbish outside will be caught."

A woman who works on the same road says the situation has caused a myriad of problems.

"The smell is atrocious and what is sad that there are eateries right next to the dump. We are finding that there is an influx of flies and rodents too. It is absolutely disturbing. What is also happening is that there are vagrants digging in the bins, which makes it worse."

Hawksworth says there have been several clean-ups with teams from eThekwini at the refuse site.

He says another team was due back at the dump site on Tuesday.
