Pietermaritzburg pupil suspended for racist voice note

The Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High School pupil said to have recorded a voice note in which other school girls are referred to with the k-word - has been suspended.

This has been confirmed by the KZN Education Department which says the pupil is suspended pending an investigation into the incident.
The Grade 11 girl was apparently unhappy that her name was written and pronounced incorrectly.
The voice note has been circulating on social media.

KZN Education spokesperson Kwazi Mthethwa says the pupil is heard using the word on a voice note which he says is circulating on social media.
"As the department, we have a zero tolerance policy towards racism. It is against this policy that we have decided to suspend the learner in question," he said.
