PICS: Rescue efforts continue after Taiwan earthquake
Updated | By ECR Newswatch
An eight-year-old girl has been the latest survivor to be rescued from the rubble of an apartment complex after a deadly earthquake in Taiwan.
About 118 people remain trapped in the ruins two days after the incident while 37 were killed in the phenomenon.
It is reported eleven buildings collapsed in the city of Tainan in Saturday's earth quake - measuring a magnitude of 6.4.
Prosecutors have launched an investigation into the collapse of a 16-storey building, the only high-rise in the southern city to crumble completely when the quake struck.
This comes as parts of KZN felt a tremor from the south coast to the west of Durban at the weekend.
The Council for Geoscience's Michelle Grobbelaar says it is unlikely the seismic occurrences are linked especially considering the distance between the two states.
"There are theories about the fact that since all the plates are connected, if one moves then it can cause the others to move. Should the theory be true (it has still to be proven), it would probably take time for the other plate to react to the one plate which moved.
"In addition, South Africa is far from the African plate boundary and thus would probably not be affected anyway," she said.
