Emergency services say a taxi and bakkie collided in the vicinity of the M7 off-ramp at about 6am.

"Paramedics arrived at the scene to find one of the vehicles in pieces on the freeway. A taxi and a bakkie collided before the bakkie basically disintegrated into three pieces across the freeway," said Rescue Care's Garrith Jamieson.

The driver of the bakkie was seriously hurt and trapped in the wreckage.

Advanced life support paramedics stabilised the man while firefighters used the jaws of life to cut him free.

Jamieson says he was taken to hospital for further treatment once removed from the vehicle.
