Spokesperson Chris Botha says the boy is in a critical condition.

"Paramedics were called out to a school in the Phoenix area, where an 18-year-old boy had sustained a gunshot wound. According to rumours, the boy and another scholar had some arguments between them last year. The one boy then shot the 18-year-old," he said.

Botha says the victim sustained critical injuries, and was transported to a nearby hospital for further care.

Police are investigating.
