Phoenix murder, unrest suspects must face wrath of the law: Community leader

A community leader in Phoenix says it's unfortunate that the behaviour of a handful of people has led to the entire community being painted with the same brush.

Ronnie Veeran has been commenting on the killings during the unrest.

He's acknowledged that some, while protecting the community from looters, took the law into their own hands.

Veeran says residents are deeply hurt by accusations of racism and the now simmering tensions in neighbouring communities that have peacefully been living side-by-side for years.

Ten suspects lined up in the Verulam Magistrate's Court on Monday facing various charges linked to the violent unrest and the murders in Phoenix.

The matter has been postponed to Friday for bail consideration.

Veeran said: "I think the law must take its course. It is unfortunate that a few people took the law into their own hands and an entire community had to be tarnished with the same brush.

"So if they appeared in court and there are proper charges and they do find against them they must face the wrath of the law. It doesn't matter from which side of the spectrum they may be."

Peace Committee convener Chris Biyela says the suspects need to answer for the crimes that were committed.

He says while some Amaoti, Bambayi and Inanda residents are pleased that there've been arrests, the anguish and trauma being felt by those who've lost their loved ones have deeply impacted communities there.
