Its understood the formation of the tracks may have been disturbed due to recent heavy rains in the area.

The seven coaches train was en route to Mthatha to service communities in that area close to Adelaide.

Transnet spokesperson Ayanda Shezi says at the time of the derailment, only skeletal staff were on board.

One security guard sustained minor injuries.

"The heavy rains that we've seen in recent times have had quite a negative impact across the rail network and we've had parts of the network submerged underwater in some areas of the country.

"Comprehensive investigation is being undertaken to establish the cause of this particular derailment and the train will resume services once it's being declared safe to do so."
