'We lost everything': Ladysmith mother recalls flooding at her home

As roads clear up and cleaning operations get underway in Ladysmith following the floods this past weekend, the affected families say they have been left with nothing but the clothes on their backs.

Resident Brenda Mazibuko says the screams from neighbours awoke her and her 16-year-old son on Sunday night as the water began flowing into their home.

She says the speed of the rising water levels prevented them from taking anything before the evacuation to safety.

Mazibuko has been living at the indoor sports complex along with other affected families since Monday.

She hasn't been able to go into her house yet, as slippery mud and water has not fully subsided.

The mother says although she is grateful to be safe and sound, she still has many worries.

"I am deeply saddened because we lost everything in these floods. All our belongings are soaked and damaged.

“Where I am right now, I cannot go to work, and I work at a retail shop, so no work, no pay. My son cannot even go to school because all the stationery and school uniform I bought him is also damaged."
